Normalmente lo que más disfruto de los partidos de fútbol es la narrativa. No hay nada como un buen partido salpicado con el ingenio de los locutores. Los interminables festejos de cada GOOOOLLLLL.
Pero lo cierto es que los partidos se ganan en la cancha, y hoy el TRI empleó tecnología de punta, TECNOLOGÍA G4 en la triada del Gio, el Guille, y Guardado de arriba abajo en la cancha y el guardameta Guillermo (Memo) Ochoa que no permitió que los Ticos le perforaran la malla. Hoy el TRI jugó como si fuera el llamado “Gigante” de la CONCACAF. Habrá que ver si mantiene su nivel contra los Catrachos en su intento por acortar la cita con Sudáfrica 2010. De cualquier modo, esta tarde hicieron que 70 millones de mexicanos olvidaran el hambre, las carencias, el desempleo, la inseguridad, hasta la desigualdad social (a la hora del triunfo todos somos mexicanos, ¿verdad?). Nada más importa cuando gana el TRI, aunque sea por 90 minutos todos somos mexicanos. De los otros 30 millones, pues tenemos que reconocer que no tienen electricidad, y mucho menos televisores.

Barrick & Jones (Equal but Different)

This was supposed to be the announcement prior to their wedding party. However,Tyler Barrick and Spencer Jones had to fight homophobia from their townhome newspaper, before being able to toast with family and friends. Even though more than 1,000 papers nationwide have policies allowing same-sex wedding and engagement announcements, The Spectrum in St. George, Southern Utah decided not to publish the annoucement for Barrick and Jones because "only legal marriages" are published in that news paper. The Spectrum thus tried to wind up by alleging that "Gay marriage" is not legal in Utah. Fortunately, another news paper -The Salt Lake Tribune, agreed to run the announcement.

Los Muertos de Chenaló, Masacrados Doblemente
A casi 12 años de la masacre de 45 indígenas en Chenaló (Las Abejas) Amnistía Internacional pide una nueva investigación para esclarecer los hechos que aparentemente –ahora resulta, fueron fabricados por el gobierno de Ernesto Zedillo. Esto a un día de que la Suprema corte ordenó liberar a varios sentenciados por el caso y a que se esperan más liberados en días siguientes.
Este caso de barbarie definitivamente me trae amargos recuerdos. Era diciembre del 97 y en la casa del Indio Fernández en Coyoacán, Ofelia Medina encabezaba una posada para recabar fondos para los habitantes de Chenaló (Las Abejas). Noche bohemia en la que también participaba Denise De Kalafe con su guitarra, su bella música y su voz, complaciendo a los invitados “por una lana” para ayudar a los indígenas. Noticias llegaban de que los indígenas simpatizantes Zapatistas llevaban días preocupados por su seguridad y rezando, implorando a Dios que los protegiera. De nada sirvieron sus ruegos, ya todos sabemos cómo los paramilitares se ensañaron con ellos y masacraron principalmente a mujeres y niños indefensos.
Los indígenas que fueron asesinados por grupos paramilitares eran simpatizantes del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN), que se alzó en Chiapas contra el Gobierno en 1994 en demanda de mejores condiciones de vida para las comunidades autóctonas del país.
No obstante que sobrevivientes de la masacre y familiares de las víctimas aseguran que quienes dejaron la cárcel Sí participaron en los crímenes, y organizaciones de derechos humanos han alertado sobre posibles actos de violencia por represalias, la Suprema Corte aprobó ayer la liberación de 20 personas acusadas de participar en la matanza. Los ministros señalaron en su fallo un cúmulo de irregularidades en las investigaciones, como fabricación de pruebas y un proceso judicial injusto. La Corte revisará posteriormente los casos de otros 31 condenados, que podrían también salir libres.
Que interesante que sea precisamente este caso del que la Suprema Corte se ocupara para exhibir, sentar un precedente, y ventilar la tan conocida falta de justicia del sistema mexicano. ¿Y para las víctimas y los sobrevivientes de Chenaló quien va a clamar justicia? Ya pueden empezar a rezar otra vez.

Isn't Meryl Streep delightful? I mean the old saying "The older the wine the better" has never been to better use than to describe this wonderful actress. I didn't know about Julia Child -pardon the ignorance, but seeing her come to life through Meryl's masterful creation made me fell in love with her like Julie, the character from the movie. Julia & Julie brought back melancholy to my life. My mother in the sixties, women cooking, dressing up for their men that acted as such. I couldn't help but come home and bake (OK I'm vegetarian so I wouldn't go and throw on a pot live lobster) but YES I BAKED an apple strudel that's been waiting in my fridge for weeks. BON APPETIT!

and that's not a basketball score. It is Herstory in the making. Finally Judge Sonia Sotomayor has been confirmed to the Supreme Court. Ground breaking in several ways: First Latina, third woman to the bench. Turned out the "Wise Latina" was right, her hard work, discipline, and willingness to keep her dream alive, paid off. Despite a reticent GOP that tried relentlessly to throw stones her way, Judge Sotomayor has been confirmed today August 6, 2009 to the bench as the 111th Justice. Despite lately accomplishments by minorities (Obama and now Sotomayor) much has to be done in this country to balance things off, however, for now on little girls in America can look up to Sotomayor and believe that, just as more than 40 years ago activist Dolores Huerta said: YES WE CAN. Congratulations Judge Sotomayor!

JUDGING SONIA

Sonia Sotomayor enters confirmation hearings for her historic nomination to the Supreme Court this morning. If confirmed she will be the court's first Hispanic and third woman justice.

In the nearly seven weeks since President Barack Obama nominated Sotomayor to replace retiring Justice David Souter, critics have labored without much success to exploit weaknesses in her record. Republican senators also must take care to avoid offending Hispanic voters, the fastest-growing segment of the electorate, by attacking Sotomayor too harshly.

The opposition has insisted Sotomayor will twist the Constitution to which she has been quoted saying: "I don't believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstance. It says what it says. We should do honor to it."

Big noise has made the Ricci case where Sotomayor was following the Rule of the Law. Her ruling reflected 38 years of court decisions, had she done otherwise she would've been sidelined as a judicial activist trying to create law.

Sotomayor has been chastised for her saying "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
This is particularly important because while she's been accused of reverse racism (whatever that means) her words have come from a minority living by the rule of a white-males-society, whom had never had to apologize for 'being' since male-whiteness has been taken as the norm. And that's where white-male-senators judging her today don't want to go.

Senior Follies of San Diego good, but Lack Diversity

The Christian Community Theater presented the musical "Senior Follies" last month in East County. With the theme "On the Road Again" the musical journey occupied a cast of San Diego seniors from 55 to 94. That's right a 94-year-young Mrs. Vesta Young vibrant piano player was part of this cast.
The production with more than 50 song-and-dance numbers honors every state in the union, from Ragtime to Big Band, from Swing to Barbershop. Thence, the audience enjoyed geographically themed numbers such as “Kalamazoo,” “Pennsylvania Poker,” “Old Cape Cod,” “Bluest Skies in Seattle,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “Chicago Is My Kind of Town,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “California Girls” and “Moon Over Miami.”
While the performances are impeccable, the lack of racial diversity from the cast made the show look like one sided. Too many blonds, too many white folks, as if blacks, Hispanics and Asians -for instance, didn't exist in America up until "Sweet Home Alabama" or "Viva las Vegas" times. A little disappointing was, also, the script, where the presenters played the smart man and the 'dumb' blond. For every question the guy asked (facts about America)the woman didn't know the answer. Then in two of the numbers there was what looked like a midget, and wasn't very clear what was the purpose of the production to excessively 'shorten' the only guy that could pass by Mexican and was the only one speaking a little bit of Spanish. For some reason the plot only shows white Americans enjoying their tourist lives across the country, and there is a sense of melancholy in it. As if the make up of this country was better off leaving out the real melting pot that America has been, it is and will be. Thumbs up for the scenography, the costumes and the lighting, though.

FEDERER WON, BUT DID HE CONVINCE?

True, Rafa wasn't present at Roland Garros' final to stop and upset (once more) Federer. However, Soderling wasn't there either.
What happened to the ferocious, almost vicious Soderling of the past week? He faded away on this first and perhaps only one occassion he'll ever have to shine.
As for Federer, he won (with a little help from Soderling?), but did he convince? NO.
Roger still has to beat Nadal on a grand slam final to validate his "best of all times" status.

OK this will be the 1st time the King of Clay won't be in the final in 5 years!!! c'mon. The sexist man alive will have time to prepare himself to defend his Wimbledon crown, and is only short one tournament to collect his first Grand Slam. Not bad for a 22-year-old fine, corteous, polite, sportsman.
Por primera vez en cinco años, Rafa Nadal no estará en la final de Roland Garros. Para acabarla de amolar, el tenista más sexy del mundo fue despachado por el tenista más desagradable de la ATP, el Sueco Robin Soderling y con quien Rafa ha tenido una historia de desavenencias en el pasado.
Ninguna táctica pareció la adecuada para Rafa el día de ayer. Soderling parecía leerle la mente antes de cada punto y despiadadamente hizo correr a Nadal de una esquina a otra, constantemente perdiendo puntos. La audiencia tuvo esperanzas de que Rafa regresara al partido cuando se adjudicó el segundo set. Nadal es conocido por sus milagrosos regresos después de estar abajo en los marcadores, pero esta vez nada le funcionó.
Al parecer la única cuerda antes de este partido fue Elena Dementieva que en conferencia de prensa vaticinó que Nadal no llegaría a la final este año. “Se ve cansado” acotó la rusa. Si Dementieva puso sus ahorros en las Vegas, seguramente recibió una agradable sorpresa. Las apuestas a favor de Nadal y contra Soderling estaban 500 a 1.
Es cierto que el Rey de la Arcilla ha perdido los dos últimos torneos en esa superficie, la final del Mutua Madrileña contra Roger Federer y ayer en Paris. Como también es innegable lo mucho que ha mejorado en las otras superficies. No solo ganó Wimbledon el año pasado, sino que también se adjudicó el Abierto Australiano el pasado enero. A estas alturas Nadal está a un torneo de completar el Grand Slam. Un currículo nada despreciable para un tenista de 22 años.
La buena noticia para Rafa es que apenas va a cumplir 23 años, es el número uno del mundo por un gran margen de puntos y ahora tendrá tiempo suficiente para preparar la defensa de su corona en Wimbledon.

Alaska's governor might just be fine running "the last frontier" state, however, in her two years governing, has she been able to end the highest rates of drunkenness and drug abuse in her state? Has she been able to bring to the 100s of small islands that compose her state, ways other than alcohol and drugs to cope with isolation, among other maladies? What is she going to teach Americans, how to hunt moose?
It's true that unless you are Dick Cheney running the show, who cares who the V.P. is? In picking a 44-year-old woman as his running mate, McCain keeps alive Alaska's tradition where often older men marry much younger women, sometimes even minors, all under the complacency of law enforcement and the general population.
The move seems perfectly calculated but, will Americans fall for it?

It’s been 236 years of males in the White House, regardless of skin color. Let’s not forget that women had to wait 50 years to vote after black males were allowed to do so. Let’s not forget that women rights activists such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton not only fought for women’s rights but also fought slavery, and at the end had to sit on the back of the bus (so to speak) leaving their own dreams and aspirations behind.
Obama winning the democratic nomination only perpetuates that male dominance,and in many ways will be more of the same.
Hillary, however, has shown the team player she is by releasing her delegates and calling her followers to support Obama, despite having been portrayed as the opposite by the media.

Now comes John Edwards -isn't he cute? to tell us (America and the world) that even though he did have sex with Rielle, he doesn't love her.
The problem here is not the affair, the infidelity (both wives apparently decided to put up with their men)
The problem is the hypocrisy, the need for lies. Why can we all agree and respect the fact that relationships come and go, and that people -men and women, are not necessarily monogamous? That an affair doesn't necessarily -always, means the end of a strong relationship, of a marriage?
Now the right wing and the Republican Party will have what John McCain hasn't been able to deliver in the past months: Enough material for gossipping and back-stabbing the Democrats for the rest of the election season.

The Spaniard climbed to number one today, as he battled a feisty Ecuadorian, Nicolas Lappenti, en route to tomorrow's semifinals at Cincinnati against a very hungry for glory, number three, Novak Djokovic.
Either way, Nadal has written history today after snatching the Number One Rank from Federer's hands. An Odyssey that took over four years and a Rafa Nadal to make it possible.

OK, back in the 70s our parents had a fit because most teenagers wore their pants "Jim Morrison" style. Jim was good looking and exhaled sensuality through every pore. Men in general look nice with their tight pants, too.
But these times are long gone. Nowadays men are determined to wear their pants "Cantiflas" style.
And for those that don't know who the Great Cantiflas was, let me tell you that another great actor, Charles Chaplin, considered Mario Moreno "Cantinflas" the greatest comedian of all times.
Anyways, Cantinflas -the character, didn't have money, so his wardrobe was very thrifty. A belt for instance, was out of limits. His pants falling down always.
And that's what happens now with men. Apparently, the trend began in prisons, where men are not allow to wear belts to avoid attacks, accidents or suicides.
Wherever it came from, men have forgotten to ask women -or anybody else, whether we like it or not.
It's early to tell what the consequences of wearing loose pants will bring to male's anatomy, although, some early research has shown that wearing pants that way is causing damage, both muscular and to the bones, by dragging their legs in an unnatural way.
Whatever the outcome, men should do some research themselves.
What make them think that we enjoy watching their "crack" when they bent?
I've asked several teenagers and grown up men how come they wear their pants that way, and no one has been able to give me a convincing argument.
Even if they look like Morrison or Hendrix, watching someone's raw butt is not sexy, is not sensual, and is not even clean.
So, guys, please move on, find a new trend and pull up your pants!

GAY MARRIAGE CONTROVERSY

Gay marriage in California has stirred sentiments in both sides of the issue. Opponents of the measure have, almost, brought God himself to their meetings in order to back up their point of view.
Groups opposing gay marriage have gone as far as to ignore history in order to convince the public of the tradition and sanctity of marriage.
They insist in defining marriage as an unmovable institution that up until now have never changed or being challenged. Unfortunately, this argument is –in these modern times, a (google) click away from being stripped-off validity.
One only needs to do a little research online to understand the ever-changing nature of marriage.
Even societies that have conducted their everyday activities around their religious beliefs such as the Jews have had laws that have changed to go with the times.
For instance ancient Hebrew law required a man to become the husband of a deceased brother’s widow. That doesn’t happen nowadays, unless it’s been kept secret.
Throughout history and even today, families arranged marriages for couples. The people involved didn't and don't have much to say about the decision. Most couples didn't marry because they were in love but for economic liaisons. Were these types of marriages en synch with God’s master plan?
Truth is marriage has evolved through the years.
It was at some point a way to ensure property, then a way to guarantee paternity.
The notion of marriage as a sacrament and not just a contract can be traced St. Paul who compared the relationship of a husband and wife to that of Christ and his church (Eph. v, 23-32). But what about non-Christians, non-Catholics, or anybody else without religious background?
Opponents of gay marriage invoke the bible as proof to oppose it.
However this same law is the law that allowed poligamy now banned in many countries.Divorce wasn't allowed for many years, and was the cause of highlighted crimes among European monarchies, and now is widespread accepted.
Opponents of gay marriage insist in bringing religious beliefs to a secular world, where many of them have not only taken advantage of a newly allowed divorce, but have also engaged in conducts otherwise prohibited by the same religion they invoke to condemn gay marriage, such as infidelity, children out of wedlock, etc.
Then there’s the argument of marriage between a man and a woman in order to fulfill procreation. So, what about infertile men or women? What about men or women that willingly decide not to have children? What about men and women that decide adoption over procreation? Are they, too, going against God’s will?
Their vanity goes as far as to pretend that they know what God would do. As if god has personally spoken to them, and told them “Go on and make sure that gay marriages don’t happen.”
It’s such their conceit that they act as if they have been “in the other side” and back to have the authority to tell everyone else what is right and what is wrong.
Opponents of gay marriage insist homosexuals are not fitted to fulfill what it takes to be within a responsible marriage, to be committed to each other, and to society.
They see homosexuals as a sort of handicap people, unable to act responsibly, almost as mentally unsuitable to conduct themselves and take care of themselves and others.
If that’s the situation, how come homosexuals don’t have preferential treatment say tax exemptions in their character of handicap people?
Reality is entering into a marriage is entering into a contract where two people benefit from it.
Single people still have to cough-up 30 percent of their income, and that benefits the state.
There’s much more behind opposition to gay marriage than the sanctity of the act.
Regardless of how people enter into marriage, a matrimony is a bond between two people that involves responsibility and legalities, as well as commitment and challenge. As such, marriage should be allowed between two consenting adults, regardless of their sexual orientation.

In a world where women still earn 70 cents for every dollar that men earn for equal job, and sometimes not even that amount, Wimbledon has become the last Grand Slam Tournament to adopt equal pay policy for men and women.
Thanks to the job of amazing players on and off the court such as Billy Jean King, who has relentlessly advocated for women players' rights.
Most male players agreed it was only fair for women to be pay through all rounds at this year's tournament an equal amount that men.
It was interesting to hear Novak Djokovic - the Serb player, argued that women don't have to play five sets as men do and for that reason they shouldn't be paid the same amount.
This was for many years an argument that even officials from different tournaments used as an excuse not to pay female competitors as much as they pay men.
An argument they always forgot was that women are by nature smaller than men, and have to play and cover the same surface as men -often time and a half their weight, and many inches taller.
It makes only sense that women would have to play less sets in order to compensate for being exposed to play in a court made and fit for men players.
What's interesting is facts like this one have been always overlooked.
Whatever the rationale behind for -finally, granting women players equal pay, it was only about time. This is the 21st Century.

Spaniard tennis star Rafael Nadal conquered yesterday his fourth French Open Title and left behind # 1 Roger Federer in his vie to win this tournament. The French Open is the only title that has eluded the Swiss in his quest for a Grand Slam.

Nadal, also, tied tennis leyend Bjorn Borg record of four consecutive French Open Titles,and as of today looks unstoppable.
